The Népstadion, the People's Stadium, opened in 1953 at the height of Hungary's Golden Team. It was built partly by volunteers, and for decades it held more than 90,000 people.

In 2002 it was renamed after Ferenc Puskás, the Hungarian captain who later starred for Real Madrid. By then the stadium was crumbling, and it was demolished in 2016.

The new Puskás Aréna opened in November 2019. Its arched façade recalls the old stadium, and during the Euro 2020 tournament it was the only venue allowed to fill every seat.
