Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich wanted a football-only stadium to replace the athletics-focused Olympiastadion. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron won the competition with a design that looks like an inflatable rubber boat.

The arena opened in May 2005 and hosted the opening match of the 2006 World Cup a year later. 1860 Munich moved out in 2017, so the stadium now belongs to Bayern alone.

The façade is made of around 2,800 ETFE cushions filled with dry air. Each can be lit separately — red for Bayern, and in other colours for national-team games and special occasions.

Pitch

1

Lower tier

Close to the pitch and very loud, including the standing Südkurve for Bayern fans.

2

Middle tier

Business seats and boxes with the best overall view.

3

Upper tier

One of the steepest stands in Germany. Far away but with a great view of the whole game.

Seating tips

  • The Südkurve is the loud Bayern end. For a calmer view pick the long sides.
  • The upper tier is very steep — not ideal if you're afraid of heights.
  • Matches sell out to members first, so check official resale for tickets.
