The site was once home to the Stadion Dziesięciolecia, built in 1955 from the rubble of wartime Warsaw. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass there in 1983, during martial law.

After 1989 the crumbling stadium became Jarmark Europa, one of the largest open-air markets in Europe, with thousands of traders selling everything from jeans to electronics.

The new stadium was built inside the old bowl for Euro 2012 and opened in January 2012. Its red-and-silver façade recalls the Polish flag, and the roof membrane folds out from a central spire in about 20 minutes.
