Anfield

Home of the Kop and You'll Never Walk Alone

Liverpool FC's ground in the north of the city is small by modern standards, but few stadiums are as loud. The famous Kop end, the singing before kick-off and the European nights have made Anfield a place fans travel from all over the world to see.

Getting there

Anfield Rd, Liverpool L4 0TH

Departures

  • Soccerbus from Sandhills stationMerseyrail Northern line to Sandhills, then the matchday shuttle bus straight to the stadium.
  • Bus 17 or 26 from Queen SquareRegular buses from the city centre, about 20 minutes. Expect them to be full before kick-off.
  • Walk from Lime StreetAbout 45 minutes on foot from the city centre, and it's what many fans do after the game.

After the show

There are no trains next to Anfield, so the roads clear slowly. Walk towards Stanley Park and the city, or wait for the Soccerbus queue to go down.

Bags and entry

Bags larger than A4 are not allowed, and there's no left-luggage at the stadium. Bring a small clear bag only.

  • Power bank

Small power banks are usually allowed. Charge it before you go, mobile data gets slow with a full crowd.

  • Umbrella

Only small foldable umbrellas get in. Large or golf umbrellas are refused, so a poncho is safer.

  • Paying inside

Anfield is cashless. Card or phone payment only.

On the day

When the gates open

Pitch / floor

Tier by tier

  1. 1

    Lower tier

Close to the pitch in all four stands, including the single-tier Kop.

  2. 2

    Middle tier

Main Stand and Anfield Road Stand only, with the best side-on views.

  3. 3

    Upper tier

High in the Main Stand and Anfield Road Stand, with a wide view over the city.

Seating tips

  • The Kop is the loudest and most famous stand, but it's mostly season ticket holders. General sale tickets are rare.
  • The Main Stand gives the best view of the whole pitch, and the upper tier has a great view of the Kop.
  • Away fans sit in the Anfield Road Stand corner, so neutral fans usually end up in the Main or Kenny Dalglish Stand.

Where to sit

  • Best for a concert

    Main Stand, middle tier

Faces the stage when it's set up in front of the Kop, with a clear view of the screens and good sound.

  • Best for football

Main Stand or Kenny Dalglish Stand, lower tier near halfway

The classic side-on view. You're close enough to hear the players.

  • On a budget

    Anfield Road Stand, upper tier

Usually the cheapest seats, high up behind the goal but with a full view of the Kop.

  • In the shade

    Main Stand

The tall Main Stand has the deepest roof, so it's the most sheltered from rain and wind off the Mersey.

Anfield opens as the home of Everton

Anfield opened in 1884 as the home of Everton. When Everton moved out in 1892 after a dispute with the landlord, John Houlding founded a new club to play there: Liverpool FC.

In 1906 the club built a huge terrace behind one goal and named it Spion Kop after a hill in the Boer War. The Kop could hold about 28,000 standing fans and became the most famous stand in English football. It was rebuilt with seats in 1994.

A new three-tier Main Stand opened in 2016, and the expanded Anfield Road Stand followed in 2024, lifting capacity above 61,000. Concerts are rare but big: Taylor Swift played three nights here in June 2024.
