Leer la historia completa

The first Estádio da Luz opened in 1954. It grew to more than 120,000 places and was the home of Eusébio, who led Benfica to European Cups in 1961 and 1962.

For Euro 2004, Benfica built a new stadium next to the old one, which was then demolished. The new Luz opened in October 2003, and the final in July 2004 ended with Greece's shock 1-0 win over Portugal.

Luz means light, but the name actually comes from the old neighbourhood and its church, Nossa Senhora da Luz. The red seats and the polycarbonate roof still let plenty of sunshine in.
