The GAA buys the ground and names it Croke Park

Leer la historia completa

Sports were played on the site from the 1880s. In 1913 the Gaelic Athletic Association bought the ground and named it after Archbishop Thomas Croke, one of its first patrons.

On 21 November 1920, during the Irish War of Independence, British forces opened fire on the crowd at a Gaelic football match. Fourteen people died, including player Michael Hogan, and the Hogan Stand still carries his name.

The stadium was rebuilt stand by stand between 1993 and 2005. In 2007 it opened to rugby and soccer for the first time while Lansdowne Road was rebuilt, and Ireland beat England 43-13 in an emotional match.
