Club president Santiago Bernabéu pushed for a new stadium after the Spanish Civil War. The Nuevo Estadio Chamartín opened in December 1947 and was renamed after him in 1955, while he was still in charge.

Here Real Madrid built the team of Di Stéfano and Puskás that won the first five European Cups. The stadium also hosted the 1964 European Nations' Cup final and the 1982 World Cup final.

From 2019 to 2024 it was rebuilt around the old stands without missing a season. Now a steel skin wraps the outside, a retractable roof covers everything, and the grass slides into a greenhouse 30 metres below the stands.
