Opens as La Peineta, an athletics stadium of the Madrid region

The stadium opened in 1994 as an athletics venue owned by the Madrid region. Locals called it La Peineta, the comb, because of the shape of its single grandstand.

Atlético Madrid took it over and started a full rebuild in 2011. The original stand was kept, new stands were built around the rest of the pitch and a huge roof was added.

Atlético played their first match here in September 2017. The stadium hosted the 2019 Champions League final, took the name Riyadh Air Metropolitano in 2024 and will host the Champions League final again in 2027.
