San Siro was built in 1925–1926 by Piero Pirelli, then president of AC Milan, as a football-only stadium without a running track. Inter moved in in 1947, and the two rivals have shared it ever since.

For the 1990 World Cup, a third tier was added on 11 concrete spiral towers, with a roof held up by red steel girders. In 1980 it was officially named after Giuseppe Meazza, a star of both clubs.

The stadium hosted the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics. The clubs bought it from the city in 2025 and plan a new stadium nearby.
