The arena was built for the 2004 IIHF World Championship and opened as Sazka Arena. It was the largest indoor venue in Central Europe and quickly became the city's first choice for major concerts.

After the original owner's financial problems, it was renamed O2 arena in 2008. It has since hosted two more Ice Hockey World Championships, Davis Cup and Fed Cup finals and hundreds of world tours.

Next door, the O2 universum conference and concert hall opened in 2019, turning the Vysočany area into Prague's main entertainment district.
