A Roman fort called Mamucium stood here in AD 79, but Manchester boomed in the 18th and 19th centuries as the world's first industrial city, nicknamed 'Cottonopolis'.
Its red-brick mills and canals now house bars, hotels and studios, and the city gave the world the first passenger railway station, the computer and a defining music scene.
